    Snowmageddon 2011

10 inches in the forecast and it’s been coming down hard!  I sent Momo outside to play with his new raincoat, but he didn’t look too excited. He stayed by the door as the snow accumulate on him…. He’s probably wondering what’s all these little things attacking him…. Whatever it is, it sure tastes yummy! 2 minutes later, he’s already telling me he wanted to come back…. Yes, it’s snowing...

    Momo Doesn’t Like Snow Anymore?

Today, the DC area had its first “major” snow of the season. Yes, 2 inches is pretty major here. All you Canadians and New Yorkers and Chicagoans can stop snickering now. I had a snow day work for so I came home and wanted to take some pictures with Momo.  He was excited for like 2 minutes and then he wanted to go back inside.  He used to love snow!!!  This past February, when DC had that epic snow storm, he was begging to go...

Fostering Dylan… Part IX

Yes… It’s just Dylan now. He’s been here for over 3 months and he has made significant progress.  Though I must say that he’s probably not good for families with kids because he’s still so timid.  Anyway, after Dante left, I thought for sure he’s just going to cry all day long.  But, he didn’t!  He just doesn’t like it when he’s alone.  At first, he would bark and bark and bark.  But now, he has gotten better and only howl every few minutes and will eventually quiet down.  Yes, he howls!

I let him roam around the house a lot.  But, he started chewing on shoes so I had to section him off again most of the time unless I am watching him.  He’s very much attached to Momo right now.  If I gate him off from Momo, he’ll lay by the gate to wait for him.  They play all the time!  They chase each other and wrestle and just look like they are having the time of their lives!

Something that I just love about Dylan is how he tilts his head when he looks at me. He’s so cute!!! He also loves to wiggle his nose. Momo never does it, but Dylan really can move his nose left and right. He’s so funny!

It’s summer time and I have been taking Momo and Dylan out for walks and even went on a hike! They both had a lot of fun and tracked in pounds of sand and grass.  Dylan wasn’t very curious about the water.  He just wanted to go wherever Momo went.

And eventually, someone threw Momo in the water and Dylan just ran in after him!  Now, that’s loyalty!!  Doesn’t he look totally confused?
They didn’t care for the water.  They tasted it and then went back on land.  I think they just have more fun running around in the big grassy area.  Yes, I let him Dylan run around on his own.  He was dragging like 15 ft of leash behind him so I felt that it was easy to get him back.  Besides, he won’t go anywhere without Momo.
So, they had a lot of fun running around.  I like this area because it’s a big wide area for them to run around and it’s far away from the road so I don’t have to worry about them in the streets.  I can’t wait to go back.  I love seeing Dylan run around because he just has a great bounce to him.  I wish I can let him off leash, but it’ll just be too hard to get him back.  He is less timid now.  Sometimes, he would stand still while I approach him instead of running away.  He actually let my dad pet him today!  Major improvement for sure! He’s such a cutie!  I hope someone comes whisk him off to his happily ever after soon.  I am trying not to get too attached, but it’s getting hard!

Fostering Dante and Dylan… Partly Gone

Posted by Joyce In Doggie Friends, Fostering | 1 Comment »

A few weeks ago, a wonderful family stopped by my house to meet Dante.  They loved him at first sight and promptly whisked him away to happily ever after.  Dante was with me for over 2 months and I was sad to see him go.  I was even more sad for Dylan because I wasn’t sure how he will be without his best friend.  But, surprisingly he seems fine!  More about that later thought.  This post is all about Dante and his new life!  Thanks to Dante’s new mommy, I got lots of updates and pictures.  She’s kind enough to allow me to share her story here.

From Dante’s new mommy:
He is doing very well.  I’m so proud of him.

Fostering Dante and Dylan… Part VII

So much has been going on that I didn’t have time to update about Dante and Dylan!  They are more socialized now and even cuter!  First, let’s talk about Dylan.  He doesn’t run away from me as much anymore and it’s fairly easy to pick him up.  He still tries to run away when I try to pick him up, but not as fast.   He also doesn’t struggle much in my arms now.

I have a funny story with Dylan.  A few weeks ago, he was having potty issues.  He had diarrhea for a few days and then there was some blood in his poop so I took him in to the vet.  So, at first, while we were waiting, he was just trying to run away from me, pulling on his leash and all.  Then, he did this…..

Isn’t he so cute???  I was like…. “What’s going on?  Why does he want to climb on me?”  Well, here’s why…. I think he was afraid of that big dog.  And from that point on, he was clinging to me at the vet’s office!

Even the vet was surprised that he was behaving so well!  He went through the whole exam without struggling and he got his nails trimmed!  He was being so affectionate and cuddly.  But… at soon as we got home, he ran to Dante and forgot about me.  It was nice while it lasted though.

Dante has been his affectionate self.  One thing I learned about him is that he’s afraid of thunderstorms.  He didn’t cling to me like Dylan did when he was afraid of the big dog.  But, he just curled up against a corner and didn’t want to move!  Momo is also afraid of thunder.  He usually jumps on me when a thunderstorm starts.

I took them out for more adventures now that the weather is warmer.  We went to a BBQ together where they ran around and around the big fenced yard with 2 dachshund puppies.  They were having so much fun!  They were devious too, always waiting for my niece to drop her food.

Last week, I took them out for a walk.  Yes.  All 3 of them!  I had 3 leashes that eventually turned into 1.  It was fun walking with them!  I had to stop a few times to talk to people about them.  One time, they wrapped the leash around me and it took 5 minutes to detangle myself from them!  Dante likes to walk on his own and Dylan likes to walk right next to Momo.

I wanted to take a break on the bench and they tangled themselves around the bench.  That took another 5 minutes to detangle.  Props to all dog walkers out there before walking more than 1 dog is hard!  It was very interesting, but I will never have to do it again.  Why?  Well, that’s another story…. for next time :)

Fostering Dante and Dylan… Part Snipped

Posted by Joyce In Doggie Friends, Fostering, Health | 1 Comment »

Dante and Dylan are about 1 year old and they are way overdue for neutering. But, since we didn’t have any of their medical records, we had to start fresh with their shots and couldn’t schedule them for neutering till last Friday. So, I dropped them off Thursday night at the Vet’s office. My vet is very nice. They keep them the night before the surgery (optional) and the night after. Got them back Saturday morning and only Dylan got a cone because the techs said that Dante was very good with not licking.

Dylan, being the devious lil thing that he is, took the cone off within an hour.  But I watched him for the whole day and he didn’t lick.  It was super funny to see him banging the cone into everything though.  He was so confused!

Dylan healed pretty well.  After less than a week, he only has the stitches to at the incision which will be absorbed by themselves.  I was slightly worried because all he wanted to do was jump around with Momo.  I tried to keep them separated, but he would just jump up against the ex pen.  I figured he will go crazy no matter what so I let him out to play.  His curly hair is so cute!  He’s super curly and nothing I do can keep the fur from curling in front of his eyes!

Dante, on the other hand, started licking after a few days!  His incision got red and a little bit swollen!  I was worried so I brought him in to the vet and they cleaned him up and gave him a cone too.

He was not happy with the cone.  He moped around for a while but unlike Dylan, he didn’t take it off.  He loves to come close to me and he banged the cone against my legs many times already!  I can’t wait for him to heal so he doesn’t have to wear this cone of shame.

This is him moping.    Looks so funny!  His fur is growing out nicely and it looks like it has tight curls too.  Very different than Momo’s slightly wavy fur, Milo’s straight fur and Miko’s crazy wavy fur.   I think Havanese in general have slightly wavy fur.  They are all so soft though!

After a few days of neosporin and the cone, Dante is close to healing now.  He still has to keep the cone on though because he still wants to lick it.  When I put the neosporin on him, he cringes so I know it still hurts him.  Hopefully, it will be fine soon.  I will start walking him outside too in case his future parents don’t want to let him potty inside.  They both needs to learn to walk on a leash and get socialized with other people and dogs, but they have come such a long way!  I am very proud of them :)

Fostering Dante and Dylan… Part V

I don’t know what it is, but I feel like Dante and Dylan have passed a hump or something and are behaving better!  I started taking Dylan out for walks more often because he is fine with the leash now.  He loves walking with Momo and would actually run on the leash, which Momo doesn’t do.   It’s always fun to walk around with a Havanese ’cause everyone wants to pet them and always ask about the breed.  Surprisingly, there are a lot of people who have never heard of them before.

Though, if we just stand around, he still gets nervous and likes to wrap around me with the leash.  I almost fell a few times!!!

I even took him out on a walk with more doggie friends!  Surprisingly, he was fine walking with them.  But, once we got back to my house, he barks at them non-stop.  Though, it may be caused by Dante’s barking.

They are also just chewing away at the nylabones!  Right now, I have 5 nylabones out and about and they still manage to fight over them.  All three will converge on one and just tug at it.  I think the most popular one is the bacon flavored one.

Look at Dante chewing away at the nylabone.  Seriously, they do this pretty much all day.  Dante just loves stealing nylabones from the other two.  He gets one and I give one to Dylan and he would immediately turn around and grab the one from Dylan.  I grab the one he had and give it back to Dylan and he would go grab that one too!  Note that his leg is bare because of his recent vet visit.

They also have an obsession with towels.  We use towels to clean up their accidents (more green than using tons of paper towels).  They love to grab the towels from the towel box.  If there’s a towel on the floor, rest assure that they are on it.  Dylan loves to chew on the towels too!

Another great improvement is that Dylan lets me hold him now!  He’s definitely not as nervous with the petting too.  He still looks like he’s just waiting for me to stop bothering him sometimes when I pet him, but at least he lets me.  We even took pictures using Photo Booth  today.

They are really getting adjusted to life in my house.  Dante is a lot better with pottying too.  The number of accidents have been decreased drastically.  Sadly, this is around the time when they will get adopted.  I have interested parties inquiring about them.  I want them to leave soon, but I know it will take them some time to adjust to their furever homes too.  I hope everything I do here will allow them to adjust quickly and live bouncy happy lives.  Anyway, more pictures to come soon!

Momo’s First Tick

Posted by Joyce In Health, Momo | 1 Comment »

One fine morning, I was petting Momo and ruffling his fur when I felt a bump on his face. It looked and felt like a popcorn kernel, smooth and solid, sticking out from his face. And where it was attached to his skin, it felt a lil swollen and crusty. I showed my dad and he said maybe he’s just a harmless piece of flesh growing out of his face. But, I was afraid that it was something like a tumor!

Dog Tick on Havanese

Dog Tick on Momo

So, I called my vet and the receptionist asked me if it’s a tick. I said I am not sure, but it’s like flesh color. She suggested that I bring Momo in. I got there and the vet tech took one look and said, “It’s a tick”. She then ripped it out and told me all about dog ticks. Ew! I was touching it and everything! So, apparently, not all ticks are black like I thought. And Momo’s Frontline wasn’t didn’t work for this tick. But, supposedly, I live in a tick infested area and Momo has been going out a lot. Now, I just need to be more vigilant after our walks to check for more stranglers coming home with him. I hope I won’t find another one again. Ew!

Fostering Dante and Dylan… Part IV

It’s been almost a month since Dante and Dylan joined our family.  I am getting to know them more and more.  And they are getting to know us too…and slowly destroying all of Momo’s toys.  Gone were the days when they were afraid of the squeakers.

Nowadays, Momo and Dante and Dylan just play all day long and fight over treats.  Dylan is very much a bouncy player.  Dante likes to sit on the side and chew his nylabone, just like a snobby older brother who thinks he’s above such childish play.  Till the fur balls roll into him that is.  Then, he’s there to teach them how to play.

I have been slowly introducing them to fruits and yogurt.  They both love it.  They know that when I step over the gate into the kitchen to pull out something, it’s mostly likely a treat.  So, they jump up against the gate to fight for it.

Whenever the weather permits, they all get to rumble outside on the deck.  It’s great because it means I don’t have to watch Dante constantly because he’s still having accidents all over the place.  But Dante is definitely not shy anymore.  If Momo is jumping up at me, rest assured that he is not far behind.

Dylan is still shy.  He doesn’t like it when I reach for him, but he’ll come sniff at me.  A strange thing is that he barks when I leave the room!  It’s like he misses me but he doesn’t?  I am not sure.  I have been struggling to put his ear medication in his ears every day for the past 10 days!  His nails are super sharp and I am just getting torn apart.  I finally figured out a few days ago that he hates the bottles, but don’t mind the cotton balls.  As soon as I put a cleaner-soaked cotton ball in his ear, he stops struggling and I can sneak the bottle in for a few drops.  So much to learn with them!

I have also tried to take them out on walks.  I tried with Dante first, since he seems more social.  But, he just does not move when he’s on a leash.  He just lies flat on the ground and refuse to budge.  When he moves, it’s to run to a corner.  Dylan just likes to chew on his leash.  So, I guess it’s a good thing that they can potty inside.   He’s cute in his harness though.

I have also been trying to separate them by setting up a ex pen for Dante in the basement.  Since Dylan is more potty trained, I leave him sectioned off in the dining room to play with Momo.  The first time, he cried and cried and howled!  Yes, he howled.  I was shocked at the sounds that were coming out of him.  But, now he doesn’t really care.  He whines for a little bit and just settle in his favorite corner to sleep.

Dante completely surprised me!  The first time, he cried and cried.  I didn’t think he was attached to Dylan at all.  Then, I figured it out.  He doesn’t like to be alone.  It just never occurred to me that he is scared of being alone.  I left them alone in the house before and they seemed perfectly fine… together.  He even peed and pooped inside the ex pen thrice!  Even after he just went potty!  I was going out of my mind with his barking and knowing that I just need to outlast him in this battle of the wills.  Then, my dad, how is a genius, thought that he just needs some noise.  So, he turned on the radio and bam!  Silence.  But he still seems to potty in the ex pen every time I put him in there.  I will then have to clean it up and put him back in with the music and he would be quiet.  Yay!  I love making progress :)

As a side note, this is what Momo looks like at night.  So tired from playing around that he just passes out on the bed.  I can rolled him into any position I want and he would just peek at me and then go back to sleep.  Ok, we are still waiting for potential furever homes for Dante and Dylan!  If you are interested, please check out their listings on Petfinder!  Here’s the link for Dante:  Dante on Petfinder.  Here’s the link for Dylan:  Dylan on Petfinder.

Momo vs Mud… Round 1

Momo loves hiking!  And with this wonderful warm weather, we have been itching to get to the trails.  Unfortunately, it has been raining here like it’s a tropical island!  Rain and sun, rain and sun.  So, we finally went after a day of downpour and my friend solemnly stating that the trails are not bad.  HA!  Here’s Momo after the hike.  You tell me who won this round of Momo vs Mud…

Thank goodness I had a blanket in the car to cover up the seat.  He usually likes to sneak over to my side while I am driving, but he was tired enough that he just laid there and slept.

We hiked for about 2 miles at Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls.  It’s not an easy trail and there were plenty of rocks to climb over.  He had a blast though!  He was going up and down the rocks and sniffing at everything!  He is slightly afraid of moving water, so no need to worry about him diving into the raging river.  Can’t wait to go again soon!!

Fostering Dante and Dylan… Part Poop

Dante and Dylan are very cute.  I love seeing them gain confidence and get adjusted to life with people.  But, they are not without their flaws.  It’s not their fault.  Poop is just part of life.  Let me start with the smaller issue: coprophagia, aka poop eating.  See this cute smile?  Not trying to ruin this great picture, but this is a poopy smile!  From day 1, Dylan has been ingesting his own poop if no one is watching him.  If I see him do that, I make loud noises to startle him so he’ll drop what he’s doing.  If I catch him going towards his own poop, then I distract him with treats.  He has gotten to a point where he comes to me for the treat if he sees me watching him do his business.  I think that’s great progress!  And props to Dylan for always pottying at the right place!

But, as soon as no one is watching, he’ll eat his poop.  Never anyone else’s poop.  Just his own.  Now, one of the possible reasons for coprophagia is sickness.  A dog may have parasites or some other disease that will cause him to eat his own poop.  I don’t think this is the case because he has been dewormed.  There are many other reasons for coprophagia and you can read more about that at dogpoopdiet.com.  A few friends alerted me to a solution today:  pineapple.  Supposedly, eating pineapple will cause unpleasant tasting poop.  I fed pineapple chunks to Dylan today.  We will see how he does tomorrow.

Now… Dante.  Sweet, social Dante…smart boy who peed on the pee pad the first day he came to my house.  He hasn’t done that in a while!  He’s been peeing on the floor almost every time.  I really don’t understand this because I gave him treats every time he did pee at the right spot.  Even more frustrating is the fact that he poops inside the exercise pen.  I keep them in a 2.5ft x 2.5ft area when I am not watching them.  He has pooped in there 4-5 times already in the past week.  At first I attributed to this behavior to his diarrhea.  I took him to the vet and he was given medication.  His poop sample did not contain any parasites.  That was yesterday.  Today, I let them out to play in my dining room area while I worked at the kitchen table.  For 3 hours, they wrestled, ate, destroyed 3 toys, and just had a party!  Dylan correctly pottied.  Dante peed twice on the floor, which was followed by 20 mins alone in the ex pen.

Around 11:30, I put them back in the ex pen for the night.  Dante didn’t poop yet, but the vet said he may not poop for a day after he started taking his medication.  Besides, I waited for 3 hours after he ate and he didn’t want to poop.  So, I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and went back downstairs to get some water.  As soon as I stepped downstairs, I smelled it.  I was gone for 15 mins and Dante made a big mess in the ex pen again.  Though, I must say his poop is looking a lot better than his soft, mucus-y poop from the past few days.  It was half sold and half soft.  I hope another day of medication will cure him of the diarrhea.  Then, I’ll just have to figure out if that’s the reason he’s pooping in the ex pen or if it’s a real behavior issue I have to correct.  I really want to crate him in a carrier because I really don’t think he’ll poop in such a small area.  But, Dylan is way too attached to him and will cause a big ruckus if I separate them at night.  Yes, I already tried.  So, poop!  The good news?  Well, I must say that their $7 bed is amazing.  The poop just comes right off it with some Nature’s Miracle cleaner and a towel!  My brother snapped a few pictures of the bed with Miko and Milo.  They are just awesome!

I guess I forgot how hard it was to potty train a dog!  Momo arrived at my house half trained to potty on newspaper and it only took a few months for him to learn.  But, it just didn’t seem like I had to clean that much poop before.  I think it’s just the fact that Dante poops in the ex pen that boggles my mind.  He pooped right next to the food bowl a couple of times.  I thought dogs don’t do that!  Hopefully they’ll learn soon!

Fostering Dante and Dylan… Part II

Posted by Joyce In Doggie Friends, Fostering, Momo | No Comments »

Dante and Dylan has been with me for almost 2 weeks!  They reminded what a pain it was to potty train Momo.  But, we are making good progress and it’s awesome to see them adjust to life in a loving home.   My brother found some awesome beds at Marshalls for them.  These beds are only $7 and it’s easy to clean!  The sad thing is… both of them didn’t know what it’s for.  For a while, they slept on the bare floor around the bed.  I had to put them onto the bed before they realize that it’s comfy!

They are also starting to play with toys.  I guess they didn’t know what toys are.  Dante actually ran away from the toy the first time he made it squeak.  But he’s brave.  He went back and destroyed it in no time.  Dylan is having his share of toy destruction too.  Good thing Momo had a lot of toys from his puppy days.

It was really nice outside yesterday so I let them play on the deck too.  They took turns marking a few corners and then just lied around and enjoyed some sun.  Dante is always so curious about everything and wanted to climb on all the benches.  Now, let me tell you more about their personalities…

Dante

Dante is a clever one.  Sometimes, I think he’s a little sneaky.  While I sat in a chair to wait for them to use the pee pads, he would pee underneath my chair.  The joy of potty training… Anyway, Dante is very friendly now.  He’s still weary of sudden movements but he loves affection.  He loves to have his belly rubbed and ears scratched.  He is a perfect lap dog and loves to hang out close to me.  He also likes to get my attention by gently pulling on my pants or tshirt when I am sitting down.

I wish I can get more action shots of him, but he’s too quick for me!  He loves to pounce.  Pounce on toys, pounce on Dylan, pounce on Momo and pounce on my feet.  He’s so funny with his head down and butt up, tail wagging, ready to make trouble!  I tried to take him out for a walk, but he did not want to move once he was outside on a leash.  Maybe he was scared of all the little kids running outside my house.  I will have to try again on the next warm day before the kids come back from school.

You can really see Dante’s special markings in this picture.  The bridge of his nose is a lighter chocolate color!  He has has a small tuff of pure white fur on his chest.  Very cute!

Dylan

Dylan is such a sweetie!  He’s still very, very shy and very attached to Dante.  When I took Dante outside, Dylan was going berserk inside the exercise pen, pacing around, whining and barking.  Poor thing.  But, I have to get them used to being without each other.  So, even though it breaks my heart, I try to separate them for short periods of time every day.

Other than his shyness and attachment to Dante, Dylan is such a fun happy puppy!  I call him puppy because he just looks so young.  He has that bounce in his step that is just super cute.  He also looks so adorable whenever you talk to him and he looks at you and then tilt his head.  He loves to play with Momo and Dante and makes the funniest noises as they wrestle.  I also think he acts like a puppy because I think he’s still in his shredding stage.  He loves paper!  Every chance he gets, he picks up renegade napkins and newspapers to shred and shred and shred.

His curly hair also adds to his puppiness.  He just needs to get used to people more and he’ll be an awesome companion.  He’ll probably benefit with another dog in the family.  I think he’s pretty much potty trained!  He hasn’t missed in a few days now!

Dylan and Dante are ready to be adopted and are listed on Petfinder.com!  Here’s the link for Dante:  Dante on Petfinder.  Here’s the link for Dylan:  Dylan on Petfinder.  If you are interested, please fill out the paperwork!  There is an interview process to ensure that you will match well with the dog you have chosen.  Don’t let that deter you though.  We just need to make sure both you and the dogs will be happy!  Stay tuned for more with Dante and Dylan next week!
